The Dark Son of Stuart

Rogan Stuart awoke with a start, the servant standing there whispered in his ear. Rogan got up and dressing quickly headed out along the stone passageway. When he reached his father's room he was greeted with a shocking sight, there lay his father pale and sweaty, a group of medics clustered around him. “What happened?” asked Rogan . “He was bit by a viper” came the unexpected reply. Rogan’s father spoke in a hoarse whisper saying ,”Rogan I soon shall die and when that happens you shall be king in my stead, with your brothers beside you.” Rogan turned and asked a guard whether the snake had been found. “No my lord I was first to respond to your fathers cry and there was no snake there.” Just then a harsh gasp escaped his fathers lips and Rogan turned to his bed but his father was dead. Rogan turned stonefaced and walked out of the room to seek the army commander.
Harkon woke with a mysterious feeling of dread. Smoke from a torch made the room dim and his eyes water; squinting around the room he saw his brother Jeb sitting there with his head in his hands. ”What is it?” he asked. “Our father is dead,” was all the response he could get out of him. Just as Harkon rose up to question his brother the door burst open with a crash and there stood the army commander , Hendel Kardel. “My lords you must flee your brother has ordered that you be killed. I disagreed with him and my life is also forfeit!” With a flurry of unanswered questions running through their heads the brothers dressed and taking up swords followed the grizzled army commander out into the passageway. A cool breeze blew through a window as they went by, causing Jeb to shiver. Their only hope was to get out of the city before the guards could be summoned. As they crossed the lawn they broke into a run, when they heard a shout rise from the palace behind them. Running through the city streets with guards behind them, Hendel took charge. “Split up and run, meet me at the gates when your pursuit is lost!” Gasping for breath and their hearts pounding the brothers fairly flew through the streets. As they rounded a corner they colided with a group of guards and in the turmoil Jeb was seized and bound.
With a crash the door slammed shut behind Jeb and he was plunged into a darkness worse than any he had ever known. It was cold and damp in the dungeon and smelled of sewage and decay. As his eyes gradualy adjusted, Jeb wondered about Hendel and Harkon, whether they had escaped or not and why his older brother wanted them killed. While Jeb sat in the dark Hendel and Harkon, who had met back up, were planning a way to rescue Jeb and kill Rogan. Meanwhile Rogan paced nervously in circles with sweat upon his furrowed brow as he thought over all the times that he had been mistreated by his younger brothers, Rogan was begining to lose his mind and every memory left was twisted to show his brothers as the antagonists. Then he heard a noise, a slight noise, and turning he gazed about the darkened room with eyes that were blurred with fatigue, he heard the noise again It was a rustle like corn against silk, soft, and yet even in his demented state he could sense danger. He turned to leave the room in a flurry of robes and taking a step forward trod upon a viper, the mate of that which had killed his father. The viper's fangs flashed and so died Rogan Stuart.
Hendel and Harkon burst into the throneroom and found Rogan dead on the floor. As Hendel examined the body Harkon spoke and grief filled his voice, "I don't understand why he tried to kill us, we were always close as kids and when Jeb was born we always looked out for him..., as Harkon rambled on about their childhood, Hendel found the bite marks and instantly went to full alert with all his senses. A shout rose from the city and a cat ran through the room. As he stood there, he felt a shiver run down his spine, and it was not the breeze. Turning slowly he froze with horror and watched as a snake slowly slid toward Harkon. Harkon had stopped talking and was sitting there oblivious to the danger. Spurred into action Hendel let out a grunt as he heaved his sword through the air chopping the snake's head off. Harkon rose shaking his head as if in a stupor and turned slowly out the door looking for his brother. It was a bitter sweet reunion between the brothers and it took a while to return the kingdom to normal. But one year later the brothers sat down in their thrones as the musicians celebrated the new kings.
